Overview of the Gokyo Lake Trekking in Nepal

Gokyo Lakes are in total of six lakes situated at an altitude of 4700 - 5000 m of elevation. The lakes are the world’s highest freshwater lake system, which has also been designated as a Ramsar Site in 2007. The trek is 10 days long and will take you to one of the memorable treks of your life. You will be able to see 4 of the highest mountains in the world through Gokyo Ri and other mountains and peaks as well. On the way, you will also come across the longest glacier in the Himalayas, Ngozumpa Glacier.

You will be landing at the airport at the highest altitude, which is risky and thrilling. As you ascend towards Namche Bazaar, you will come across a lot of landmarks on the way, like the Hillary Suspension Bridge, Sagarmatha National Park, and many more.  After descending Khumjung, the route diverges into two paths, you will take the alternate way from the classical route that reaches to Dole. 

The traipse continues towards Machermo, finally reaching to Gokyo. There are four lakes in Gokyo. You can see the two lakes on the way to Gokyo; the remaining lakes are a bit on the far side. So, you can extend your stay, and it will be on the next day. You will also ascend Gokyo Ri (5,360 m) for a better view of the mountains. After your sojourn of 2 Days at Gokyo, you will descend back to Lukla, following the same way.

You will be waking up early and catching a flight to Lukla. Due to the unsteady weather conditions at the mountainous zone, the domestic airline to Lukla only operates during the morning. The flight to Lukla can get cancelled anytime due to weather disruption. Since it is the airport at the highest altitude there are a lot of technical difficulties. 

After your safe landing at Lukla, you will get the breath of the fresh mountain air that will relax all the pressure and risk you felt during the flight. Shortly after landing, you will be trekking towards Phakding that takes you around 3 to 4 hours of hike. You will be crossing some suspension bridges and mani wall prayers on the way and calling the night at Phakding.

After your early morning breakfast at Phakding, you will set off to reach the vibrant Sherpa Capital. Namche Bazaar has the highest settlement in the Everest Region. It is the main trading center in Khumbu Region. You will be walking through the lush green vegetation, pine trees and a constant flow of the Dudh Koshi river that flows directly from the mountain.  You can also enjoy the local Sherpa Culture along the way.

Today, you will be passing through the famous landmarks of the trek like Hillary Suspension Bridge, Pasang Lhamu Gate and Monjo, where you will get an official permit for the Gokyo Lake Trek. After 5 to 6 hours of walking, you will be welcoming yourself at the Gateway of Mt. Everest. As tomorrow is the acclimatization day, you can continue to rest up at the tea house or you can feel free to explore Namche Bazaar.
 

After your morning breakfast, you will spend a day at Namche Bazaar as a process of acclimatization. As you ascend to higher altitude, your body requires certain time to adjust itself and recharge so today you will visit Namche to acclimatize and recharge yourself. 

This day you will hike to Hotel Everest View (3,880 m) for the sneak peek of Mt. Everest along with other mountains. Then you will be going to the Sherpa Museum and Enjoy the rest of time shopping for last minute items, visiting cafes and bakeries.

After the early morning breakfast at Namche Bazaar, you will be advancing to Dole. For a kick start of your journey, you will get the view of Mt. Ama Dablam, Thamserku and other peaks from afar. We will have our lunch break at Khumjung where the trails are divided. There are two routes; one is the classical trail to Everest Base Camp and another to Gokyo through Dole. You will be taking the non-classical route. 

You will also start noticing the mountain vegetation as there will be no trees. You will stop at Mongla for Lunch. The trail is rocky with many uphill, downhill and flat. During the season, you will also see Rhododendron, the national flower of Nepal decorating the way making it more beautiful. You will come across a lot of Yak Kharkas reaching Phortse Thanga eventually to Dole.
 

After breakfast, you will be continuing your journey to Gokyo Valley. Today’s destination is Machermo from where you will get the excellent view of Mt. Cho Oyu (8,188 m) right ahead of you. On the way to Machermo, you will get a beautiful view of Mt. Thamserku, Mt, Cho Oyu, Mt. Machermo and other few peaks. You will be walking along the trail with the view of mountains and herd grazing. After 5 to 6 hours of uphill walking, you will be reaching a beautiful village of small settlement, Machermo and call it your day.
 

Today is the day for your hike to the tranquil six lakes of Gokyo Valley. You will be having your early morning breakfast at Machhermo enjoying the Mountain View right in front of your eyes. Then leave towards Gokyo. The trail isn't that tiring until it descends to Dudh Koshi River. You will be climbing towards the longest glacier of Himalayas, Ngozumpa Glacier, which is quite steep and not long after, you will be welcomed by the first Gokyo Lake, Langompa Cho. 

As you continue towards the North, the second lake appears. You can see the stunning view of Gokyo Ri from the second lake. Hiking through the trail, you will come across Third Lake of Gokyo which is the main lake and most famous. The third lake of Gokyo is also considered holy and a lot of devotees come to visit the lake during Janai Purnima. 

There is a small settlement near the third Gokyo lake. You will take your lunch and some rest and we will hike for the fourth lake of Gokyo. It takes around 45 min to 1 hour to hike to reach the 4th lake. After clicking enough pictures and strolling you will return back to Gokyo. You can also visit Gokyo Bakery (Bakery at Highest Altitude) after returning.

You will be waking up quite early for the early morning trek to Gokyo Ri to enjoy the sunrise view through the mountains. The way towards Gokyo Ri is quite steep and hard but all the efforts will pay off as you stand at the height of 5360 m enjoying the sunrise view along with the view of 4 of the highest mountains in the world. 

After the early morning hike, you will have your lunch and trek back to Machermo with all the pristine and beautiful memories of Gokyo Lake.

Today, you will leave the mountain vegetation and descend towards Namche Bazaar. As we descend, you will find more human settlement and livelier returning back. After trekking for 5 to 6 hours, you will return to Namche and call it a day.

This is officially the last day walking through the trails. You will be having the final glimpse of the mountain while descending. After 6 to 7 hours of walking you will be reaching Lukla. Overnight stay at Lukla.
 

After the early morning breakfast, you will return to Kathmandu with the best scenic flight of mountains. Our representative will receive you at the airport congratulating you for your achievement and help you check in at the hotel. Then you can take a rest and prepare yourself for the farewell dinner at night.

Yes, this trek to Gokyo Lake is suitable for beginners as it is easier than Everest Base Camp Trek. But the trek still requires good fitness and mental resilience. 

If your flight to Lukla is cancelled, you can;

  • Take a shared jeep to Ramechhap, then fly to Lukla from Manthali Airport (takes around 8 – 9 hours)
  • Extend another day and take the next flight to Lukla
  • Trek from Jiri (By adding some more days at your customizable itinerary)
