Detailed Itinerary

After your early morning breakfast, you will start your scenic drive from Kathmandu to Machhakhola. If you choose to go by the local bus (affordable price), then you will have to wake up early, as they will leave early in the morning. If you are going through the private jeep, then they will pick you up from the hotel and ride on the Prithvi Highway along the bank of the Trishuli River.

The road is quite off-road and bumpy. After an 8 -9 hour long drive with green hills, narrow bumpy roads, and alongside flowing rivers, call it a night at Machhakhola. Machhakhola is a small village located near the Budhi Gandaki River.

After the exciting breakfast at Machhakhola, you will set foot on the trekking trail. Today you will leave for Jagat. You will be trekking alongside the Budhi Gandaki River, crossing the suspension bridge many times, hiking through the lush forest and small villages, attractive waterfalls, and some gradual uphill and downhill. You will move forward crossing Khorlabesi, reaching Tatopani, a natural hot spring. If you wish to stay for some time, you may relax at the hot spring.

Moving forward, you will walk through the narrower trail, stony steps, and landslip area until you reach the checkpoint of Manaslu Conservation Area, Jagat. Jagat is a traditional Gurung village with beautiful terraced fields and stone houses. The locals are very hospitable making your stay more memorable and enjoyable.

This morning, you will have your breakfast at the beautiful Gurung village, Jagat. You will continue on the Manaslu Circuit Trek route following a rugged slope towards Salleri. You will follow rivers, streams, agricultural meadows, and lush forests to Salleri and Sirdibas. You will get to see the breathtaking view of Mt. Sringi. You will have to cross the longest suspension bridge to enter Philim and continue your walk towards the northern side to reach Eklebhatti, where the way diverges. You will have to take the right side of the route to enter Tsum Valley. You will make your way up through the dense pine forest till you reach the entry point of the Tsum Valley Trek, Lokpa.

Lokpa is a beautiful village surrounded by dense forest and known for its tranquil environment. Lokpa is known for its panoramic view of Himalchuli and Boudha Himal. You will be staying overnight at the gateway of Tsum Valley.

The day starts from breakfast at Lokpa and takes us through the pine and rhododendron forests. The trail has many ups and downs, and you will get an amazing view of Ganesh Himal on the way. After 5 hours of constant walking, you will reach Chumling. Chumling is a beautiful village located in the lower Tsum Valley. It is well known for its stone-based architectural style. You will take a rest for a time and start strolling around the local monasteries, Gurwa Gompa, Panago Gompa and Mani Dhungur of Chumling. You will also get to see the panoramic view of Shringi Himal from Chumling.

Today the sun shines from the Shringi Himal, and you will have your breakfast enjoying just a majestic morning. You will move from the lower Tsum Valley region to the upper one, namely, Chekampar. Chekampar, also known as Chhekamparo, is the largest village in the Upper Tsum. There are mainly two settlements; one is called Chhokang, whereas another is Paro. The village offers an incredible view of Ganesh Himal.

In order to enjoy the view, you will need to start the trek by crossing over the Syar Khola Bridge. Trekking further for 6 to 7 hours, you will reach Chekampar and stay overnight there. Rest your fatigue by enjoying the Tibetan Tea, also known as butter tea.

You will again get the excellent view of the mountains today as you wake up and have the local breakfast. You will be gaining some altitude today, so you have to be careful and slow while ascending.  On the way, you will make a stop at the Milarepa Cave (Phiren Phu Cave). Milarepa Cave is said to have been the residence of the famous Tibetan Buddhist yogi Milarepa during the 11th century. You can also find his foot imprinted on the cave. So, it is also considered as one of the holy places of Tsum Valley. After staying for some time in a tranquil environment, you will continue your journey to Nile.

You will walk alongside the river until you cross the final bridge to reach Nile. Nile is the highest and the last settlement in the Tsum Valley. Due to the proximity to the Tibetan Border, the people there are highly influenced and have strong Tibetan Culture. During your stay at Nile, you will get to know about the century-old traditions and the remote Himalayan lifestyle of people living there.

After the early morning breakfast at Nile, you will start ascending towards Mu Gompa, the largest monastery in this region. Today you will be gaining the maximum altitude of your entire trek, i.e. 3700 m above sea level.

After ascending for 3 to 4 hours, you will reach the most sacred and important Buddhist Pilgrimage site of Tsum Valley, Mu Gompa. Mu Gompa is a peaceful tranquil monastery which is home to monks practicing Tibetan Buddhism. The older monks are responsible for teaching the younger monks/nuns. The monastery is full of the painted murals of Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), Avalokiteshwara, and life life-size statue of Tara. The monastery provides a serene environment for motivation. After your visit and exploration, you will stay at Mu Gompa or return back to Nile (as per your choice). We recommend that you stay at the Gompa to have a firsthand experience of Buddhist monks. It would be a culturally enriched, memorable experience for sure.

Today, you will descend back to Chumling after the morning breakfast. On the way, you will also visit Rachen Gumba taking a slightly alternate route. Rachen Gumba is a nunnery situated at the foothills of Siyar Khola near the border. It will provide you the best view of Kipu Himal. After 5 hours of walking from Rachen Gumba, you will reach Chumling and call it a day.

After breakfast, you will descend back to Phillim from Chumling. You will be passing through the old forest routes, terraced villages, and suspension bridges. As you descend further, you will get to see the jaw-dropping Samba Falls. After 8 hours of descent, you will reach Phillim. Phillim is a village well known for its rich culture, farming, and warm hospitality.

Today you will start descending down to Machhakhola, the start and the end point of the Manaslu Trek. You will descend the rhododendron and bamboo forest and meet the Budhi Gandaki River again. On the way, you can make a quick stop at the Tatopani and wash away your fatigue at the natural spring. You will stay overnight at Machhakhola, enjoying the local delicacies.

Essential Information

Best Time for the Tsum Valley Trek

The Trek to Tsum Valley is an incredible off-the-beaten-path journey in the Manaslu Region of Nepal. This trek is of moderate difficulty and does not reach an altitude above 4,000 m. So, the best time to go for the Tsum Valley Trek highly depends on weather conditions and visibility.

Tsum Valley Trek from March to May (Spring)

Spring is one of the best times to trek in Tsum Valley. The weather is stable, and the trails are vibrant with blooming rhododendrons and wildflowers. The temperature ranges from 10°C to 20°C during daytime, and nighttime temperature ranges from -5°C to 5°C. The weather is comfortable and has clear mountain views with colorful landscapes. The trails might be slightly crowded, but they are still much less crowded than Everest or Annapurna.

Tsum Valley Trek from September to November (Autumn)

Autumn is the most popular trekking season in Nepal due to crystal-clear skies, dry weather, and perfect visibility. The daytime temperature ranges from 10°C to 18°C, whereas the nighttime temperature ranges from -5°C to 5°C. The cons of trekking during this season are that the valley can have more trekkers as compared to other seasons.

Tsum Valley Trek from December to February (Winter)

Winter is the coldest season at Tsum Valley with snow-covered trails and freezing temperatures at higher elevations. The daytime temperatures range from 5°C to 10°C, whereas the nighttime temperatures range from -10°C to -15°C. There are fewer trekkers, and the environment is peaceful and has excellent photography conditions. There is extreme cold, so some lodges might get closed, but there is a high risk of snowfall and blocked trails.

Tsum Valley Trek from June to August (Monsoon)

The monsoon season brings heavy rainfall, slippery trails, and leeches, making it less ideal for trekking for cultural seekers and keen botanists. The daytime temperatures range from 15°C to 25°C, and nighttime temperatures range from 5°C to 10°C. The lush green landscapes and fewer trekkers on the trail could be a plus point for your trek.
