Trek Overview of North Annapurna Base Camp:

Unlike the popular southern routes like Annapurna Base Camp Trek, Annapurna Circuit Trek, this North Annapurna Base Camp Trek Route leads you into the remote and secluded valleys, lush forests, offering a raw and authentic trekking experience perfect for those seeking solitude and unspoiled natural beauty, lying in the shadow of Annapurna I (8,091 m) - the 10th highest peak in the world.

The North Annapurna Base Camp Route also holds a special place in the history of Himalayan mountaineering. In 1950, the French expedition led by Maurice Herzog made the first successful ascent of Annapurna I (8,091 m) from the northern approach, so this route is also known as the Maurice Herzog Annapurna route.  This historic climb marked the first-ever successful summit of an 8,000-meter peak, making Annapurna the first of the fourteen highest mountains in the world to be conquered.

After this successful ascent, the northern region of Annapurna remained relatively untouched by mainstream trekkers and mountaineers, primarily because of the remoteness and rugged nature of the terrain. Most trekkers and climbers subsequently favored the southern approach via the Annapurna Sanctuary. But the north annapurna base camp trails have recently gained popularity as explorers and trekkers started taking enthusiasm in seeking new and less crowded routes.

Your voyage to Annapurna Base Camp North starts from the drive to the bustling city of Pokhara, where you can enjoy the tranquil beauty of Phewa Lake and the active land before setting off towards the rugged trails. The following day is very challenging as you will be driving through the rugged trail to Narchyang. Narchyang is a small village on the northern side of the Myagdi district, where Gurung and Magar communities reside, and the a chance to experience their warm hospitality. This is the last place where you will stay at the teahouse, as you ascend, this adventure takes you through a dramatic shift of landscapes, revealing breathtaking views of snow-clad giants.

You will start the drive to Hum Khola, the road condition to Hum Khola is quite an adventure in itself, with a very narrow road with rough conditions. After reaching Hum Khola, you will start your ramble to Sandikharka, spending a memorable night in the tented camp. As you ascend, you’ll also encounter spiritual landmarks such as Panchakunda Lake and Narchyang Lake, considered sacred by the locals.

Reaching the North Annapurna Base Camp is a moment of triumph, as you stand at the foot of towering snow-capped giants, surrounded by an amphitheater of peaks including Annapurna I, Annapurna III, Himchuli, and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail). The panoramic views from the base camp are nothing short of mesmerizing, with the majestic mountains glowing in the first light of dawn. This trek is not just about conquering trails; it’s about embracing the journey, the camaraderie, and the soul-stirring connection with nature.

Essential Information

Best Time To Do the North Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Choosing the right time to trek to the North Annapurna Base Camp is essential for both safety and enjoyment. Unlike the southern route to Annapurna Base Camp, this Northern Route to Annapurna Base Camp is an off-the-beaten-path expedition that involves full camping, remote valleys, and hiking on unmarked trails. This implies that the North Annapurna Base Camp Weather has a huge impact on accessibility and trail safety.

The best season of the North ABC Trek is undoubtedly Spring (March to May) and Autumn (Late September to November). Here’s the season-wise breakdown for the trek:

Spring (March - May)

Springtime is one of the best times to trek North Base Camp of Annapurna. The days are long, with mild weather, and the burst of wildflowers on the trail makes it very mesmerizing and beautiful. The time from March to May offers excellent mountain visibility, which is crucial for navigating the less defined routes and clear views of Annapurna, beautiful flora and fauna, and a safe crossing of Mristi Khola that flows directly from the Annapurna mountain. The temperature ranges from 10°C to 18°C at lower altitudes, but the night temperatures can drop below freezing at higher altitudes. But Annapurna North Base Camp during the time of Spring is ideal for first-time visitors and the best pictures too.

Autumn (September - November)

Autumn is undoubtedly the most popular and reliable season for trekking in Nepal. As the time is considered the peak time for trekking, the crowd is more inclined towards the southern side, so the northern part of Annapurna still remains peaceful and less crowded. The air is clean and the skies are crystal clear, offering the best panoramic views of the Annapurna Massif. Trails are dry, and the post-monsoon glow gives the landscape a fresh and vibrant feel. So, Annapurna North Base Camp during Autumn is ideal for those prioritizing comfort, safety, and guaranteed safety.

Winter (December - February)

While not ideal for most trekkers, experienced adventurers with the right gear and cold-weather tolerance may consider this season for total solitude. The snow line drops significantly, and campsites near base camp may be completely covered in snow. So, the North Annapurna Base Camp in Winter main challenge is finding the route as the trails become obscured.

Monsoon (July - September)

The North Annapurna Base Camp trek should be strictly avoided during the monsoon season. This region becomes prone to landslides, swollen rivers, leech-infested trails, and zero visibility. Flash floods along Miristi Khola can pose serious risks, and camping becomes difficult due to heavy rainfall and wet gear.

Annapurna North Base Camp Trek Difficulty and Requirements of Physical Fitness:

The Northern Base Camp of Mt. Annapurna, which is also known as the pioneer route of Mt. Annapurna, is considered a moderate to strenuous trek due to various factors. The main factors are the off-trail hiking, altitude gain, and lack of teahouse support. The North Annapurna Base Camp Altitude elevates up to 4,190 m/ 13,746 ft at the Northern Base Camp, requiring the trekkers to be physically fit and capable of walking off route 6 - 8 hours a day. It’s better if you are comfortable with high-altitude trekking because your elevation gain per day is over 1,000 m, reaching the Annapurna North Base Camp in just 4 days of the Trek. So, you must be prepared physically as well as mentally.

We recommend that you include cardiovascular training, strength exercises, and multi-day hikes with a backpack to physically prepare your body for the exhaustion. Mental resilience is also equally important, as facilities are very basic and require adaptability to unpredictable mountain weather and terrain.

Permits required for the Annapurna North Base Camp Trek:

Though North ABC lies in a remote location, it is still in the region of the Annapurna Conservation Area, so you will only require the following two permits:

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
  • TIMS Card

Note: All the permits and paperwork will be arranged by Walk Mountain before your arrival. For more info on the Permits, you can check our Trekking Permits and Fees page.

Accommodation and Meals during the Trek

The North Annapurna Base Camp Trek is a full camping trek beyond the village of Narchyang. You will stay in tents pitched each night in designated or open campsites along the Miristi Khola Valley. Trekkers should bring or rent:

  • Four-season sleeping bags
  • Sleeping mats
  • Portable toilet tents (usually arranged by agencies)

In Narchyang, basic teahouses and homestays are available, but the rest of the journey relies on the support crew and camp logistics. But if you book this trek with Walk Mountain, ensure a stress-free trek as we will provide you with all of these items and the necessary items mentioned in the cost included above.

Meals are prepared by the kitchen team using fresh supplies carried from Pokhara. Expect warm, filling, and healthy food like soups, rice, lentils, pasta, potatoes, and occasional treats like pancakes or desserts. While meals are simple, they are nutritious and suitable for the high altitude.

Water and Hygiene

There are no shops or bottled water on this route, so purified water or boiled stream water is essential. Carry:

  • Water purification tablets or a filtration system
  • Reusable bottles and hydration packs
  • Hygiene facilities are limited, so wet wipes, hand sanitizer, biodegradable soap, and basic hygiene kits are a must for this trek.

Altitude Sickness and the Requirement of Acclimatization

The North ABC trek reaches elevations over 4,200 meters, where altitude-related issues can arise. It’s essential to:

  • Ascend gradually and follow the "climb high, sleep low" rule
  • Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol
  • Watch for symptoms like headache, nausea, and dizziness

Why Choose North Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

  • A very unfrequented route that leads to the Northern Base Camp of Annapurna I (8,091 m), the 10th highest mountain in the world, basically a hidden gem in the Annapurna Region.
  • A raw, adventurous experience through rugged landscapes, lesser-visited villages, and untouched valleys, perfect for trekkers who seek wilderness over crowds.
  • A perfect blend of physical challenge, off-grid beauty, and meaningful connection with nature.
