Overview of the Upper Dolpo Trek

The Upper Dolpo Circuit Trek will take you through the largest national park in Nepal, Shey Phoksundo National Park, which is home to many endangered species like the snow leopard, Tibetan Wolf, Himalayan Blue Sheep, and musk deer. The park also homes many bird species like white- rumped vulture, and Impeyan pheasant. One of the main highlights of the ramble is the Shey Phoksundo Lake, known for its mesmerizing turquoise water. The adventure will take you to the land of mystical charm and cultural richness, far from the modern world.

This 24-day trek to Upper Dolpo will take you through the lush green forest to the arid deserts, deep gorges, high mountain passes, and hidden valleys, making it a unique and off-the-beaten-path adventure for adventure seekers. The peregrination starts from Juphal Village and takes you to the isolated village of Shey Phoksundo. On the way, you can get a glimpse of the way of life of the Himalayan people.  You will pass through the villages like Dunai, Ankhe, and Sulighat to reach Phoksundo Lake. Enjoying the view of the mesmerizing turquoise water of Shey Phoksundo, your walk will continue towards the 800-year-old ancient holy monastery, Shey Gompa, via Kang La Pass. Kang La Pass is 5,360 m above sea level, with the best view of the Himalayan Peaks.

You will further pass through Namduna Gaun, Saldang village via Saldang La Pass to Yangze Gompa, also known as Ban-Po Monastery. As the region is very secluded, you will find people living the same way as they lived a hundred years ago. You will also have to blend into the same lifestyle for the upcoming days of this trek. As the locals are highly influenced by the Tibetan culture and tradition, you will notice the lifestyle, language, festivals, and beliefs similar to the Tibetan as well as pre-Buddhism culture like Bon-Po and Chaiba. You will then reroute to Sibu and get to the base of Jeng La Pass. You will reach Tokyu Gaon by traversing through the Jeng La Pass (5,090 m) and reach the beautiful Buddhist settlement of Dho Tarap.

Moving further, you will pass through Tarap Khola. On a lucky day, you will also get a chance to have a glimpse of the Blue Sheep. Your next stop would be Khanigaon and Tarakot. The trail will officially descend back to the starting point of the trek; you will meet the route again at Dunai, then continue to Juphal. You will have your flight back to Nepalgunj, then back to Kathmandu.

The journey to Upper Dolpo is not just a physical activity but also a profound journey to cultural and spiritual exploration into a hidden corner of the Nepalese Himalayas. The Upper Dolpo Trek in Nepal is a place of crystal-clear lakes, sky-piercing peaks, sacred monasteries, and warm-hearted, resilient people. For those seeking a genuinely off-the-beaten-path adventure, pure Himalayan solitude, and a deep connection to ancient traditions, Upper Dolpo offers an experience that is both humbling and transformative. Detailed Itinerary
Kathmandu to KathmanduExpand all

Your trek to Upper Dolpo commences from the scenic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. Nepalgunj is a city in the southwestern part of Nepal, serving as a gateway to the remote regions of western Nepal. You will be dropped off at the airport by private vehicle. The one-hour-long flight to Nepalgunj will provide you with the stunning lowlands of the Terai Region.

Since you will be arriving at Nepalgunj in the afternoon/ early evening, you will have enough time to explore the town, visit the local markets, and experience the way of living in that area.

Today, you will be waking up early to catch a flight to Juphal. The 45-minute flight to Juphal offers a stunning aerial view of the mountains like Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Annapurna, and others.  With the scenic flight and landing at Juphal Airport, you will officially begin your trek to Dunai. It would be an easy hike today, descending through the beautiful terraced fields and small villages. Dunai is a beautiful village on the bank of the Bheri River, which is also the administrative center of the Dolpo Region.

After the early morning breakfast at Dunai, you will begin your trek to Ankhe following the trail along the Bheri River. The trekking track today has a mixture of ascents and descents, but opens up with a beautiful view onward. You will continue to ascend until you reach Thuli Bheri Valley with a great view of Kangmara Peak.  Hiking forward, you will pass through small settlements like Dhera, known for its walnut plantation.  Then you will descend through the peaceful, dense forest canyon and a river until reaching Ankhe. You will notice the changing vegetation, a remote and rocky trekking path today. Overnight at Ankhe.

Today’s trek to Sulighat will be challenging as well as rewarding. After the early morning breakfast from the teahouse, you will start by descending through the narrow trails, juniper and pine forests. You will also be crossing several small streams where the path gradually ascends through a valley. The top of the valley will offer you spectacular views of the Dolpo Region’s pristine beauty. You will be entering the Shey Phoksundo National Park Today. After hiking further from the riverbank, you will reach Sulighat. Sulighat is a checkpoint where you will get your permits checked. Today will be your first overnight camping trip at Sulighat.

Today is one of the main highlights of this trek. You will be reaching the infamous pristine Phoksundo Lake.  You will see the meeting of two rivers today, the Phoksundo and the Pungmo River. The Sulighat to Phoksundo Lake Trek is one of the scenic parts of the trek. You will also get to see the Phoksundo waterfalls, one of the highest waterfalls in Nepal.  As you hike, you will be rewarded with the breathtaking sight of Nepal’s deepest and most stunning lake, Shey Phoksundo Lake. You will set up your camp near the turquoise Phoksundo Lake and call it a day.

Acclimatization is really necessary as you ascend to higher altitudes. So, to acclimate and adjust your body, you will spend one more day at this pristine, peaceful location of Phoksundo. You can either hike back to Ringmo Village or visit Tshowa Monastery, or simply relax by the lake. Ringmo Village is a small settlement at Upper Dolpo with mani walls, chortens, prayer wheels, and stupas known for following Tibetan Buddhism. This visit can help you take an in-depth look at the culture and the people. You will stay overnight camping at Shey Phoksundo Lake.

Leaving Phoksundo Lake, the trail gradually descends back to Phoksundo Khola (river). The path descends through the forest with a great view of Norbung Kang and Kanjirowa Himal, providing a serene, peaceful trekking experience. You will then gradually ascend to the campsite near Phoksundo River. Overnight camping at Phoksundo River.

Today’s trek will be more challenging and rewarding. After the early morning breakfast at the camping site, you will start the day by ascending through the narrow trail, opening up to the glacier valley. You will be crossing several streams, passing many bridges, and rising to the green sheep pasture.  Following the same route takes you to the top of the hill, providing a breathtaking view of Kangla Pass that you will be crossing the following day. You will also get to see the exciting view of other mountain peaks like Chhamlang, peak 6, and peak 7. The best part of today’s challenging trek is the award-winning view, with a serene and solitary route. You will be staying overnight camping at Phoksundo Bhanjyang.

Today marks one of the most exciting parts of the trek. You will be crossing the highest point of the entire trek, Kang-La Pass, today at an altitude of 5,360 m/ 17,585 ft. So, after breakfast, you will get ready to cross the strenuous Kang La Pass in the early morning. Although the ascent to the top of Kang La Pass would be difficult, you will get a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains. You will take some time clicking pictures for the memories. You will descend to Shey Gompa. The downhill is steep but becomes more gradual as you descend.  The village is very small, but the monastery is the main attraction of the area.

Shey Gompa is a monastery that was built in the 11th century. The monastery has a two-storey building of Buddhist paintings, ancient scripture, historical artifacts, and statues of Buddhist deities. This Gompa is also a hub for spiritual practitioners and general travelers.

After breakfast at the camp, you will spend one more day at the beautiful Shey Gompa as a process of adjusting to the higher altitude. You can take your time to explore the Shey Gompa or the surrounding area. You can take a rest or short hikes around the Gompa. The area is steeped in spiritual significance, and the peaceful environment adds a meditative aspect to your journey. The monastery is closely associated with Crystal Mountain, also known as "Riwo Potala". The mountain is believed to be a manifestation of the mythical Mount Kailash. So, Crystal Mountain is also called the Kailash of Dolpo. Overnight stay at Shey Gompa.

After breakfast at Shey Gompa, you will descend through the trail leading through the valley and over ridges, providing a continuous view of the Dolpo landscapes.  There are also herds like yaks and sheep grazing along the way. You will also pass through small settlements, reaching Namduna Gaon, a village rich in Tibetan culture and heritage.  You will also notice the historic Namgung Monastery at Namduna Gaon. Overnight Camping at Namduna Gaon.

Today's trek takes you through more isolated terrain, descending gradually to Saldang, one of the largest villages in the Dolpo region. You will be leaving Namduna Gaon today. From there, you will start to climb a slope and hike to Saldang via a dusty trail. After 3 to 4 hours of difficult climbing, you will reach the highest point of Saldang La Pass at 4800m. After staying there enjoying the view of the great Himalayas, you will descend the narrow trail opening up to the beautiful village of Saldang. Saldang is an important center for trade and agriculture, and you’ll see fields of barley and potatoes, as well as traditional Tibetan homes.

After breakfast at the Camp, you will start your day. Today would be a short and fascinating trek that will take you deeper into the Dolpo Region. Today’s destination is Yangze Gompa, the monastery known to be about 1000 years old. You will trek through the bleak area beside the Nagon Khola. The trail will gradually ascend through barren landscapes and rugged terrain, offering panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and snow-capped mountains.  Passing through the villages like Marang and Ki, you will finally cross the Bridge of Panzang River, reaching Yangtze Gompa.

Yangtze is the oldest monastery in Dolpo, nestling in the south of Panzang Canyon. You will be camping at Yangtze Gompa, so make sure to explore the various chortens and enjoy your evening prayer with the monks.

Leaving Yangze Gompa, you will descend towards Sibu, a beautiful riverside village. Today's hike will be comparatively easier, and you will get to enjoy the scenery and the serenity of the region. You will be passing through more stupas, mani walls, and prayer wheels on the way. You might have now become aware of the lifestyle of the Dolpo people and their faith in Buddhism. After walking on the remote trail, you will finally reach Sibu after crossing Namdo Monastery.

Your trek today will be of gradual ascent rather than descent. You will hike towards Jengla Phedi today, also known as Jengla Base Camp. After breakfast at your tent, you will start your hike through rugged trails, strong winds, and high-altitude landscapes following the Namgung Khola. You will take a good rest at Jeng La Phedi, preparing for the next day. Overnight at JengLa Phedi.

Wake up with the stunning views of the mountains from the base of Jeng La Pass. As you are aware, climbing the passes is comparatively easier during the morning, so you will again wake up early and start your way towards the top of Jeng La Pass.  It takes around 2 hours to reach the top of Jeng La Pass. The top of the pass offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Dhaulagiri massif and other Himalayan ranges. Crossing the pass, you will descend to Tokyu Gaon, passing the Tarap Valley, where you will stay overnight.

After the morning breakfast at the tent, you will begin your day towards Dho Tarap. You will enter the inner Dolpo region. The trek begins with a gradual descent towards Tarap Valley, known for its rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes. Dho Tarap is one of the highest human settlements in the world, and its unique culture, with influences from both Tibetan and local traditions, makes it a fascinating place to explore. It was once known as the capital of Dolpo.

This is your third rest day during the trip. Since the trek is three weeks long, you will need to take enough rest not to overwork your body at such a high altitude. So, this rest day is taken so that you will get the time to explore the village, learn about their culture, way of living, and lifestyle. Dho Tarap is made up of three village clusters: Dho, Tokyu, and Lang. You can take your time to visit those villages or just visit the local monasteries like Ribo Bhumpa Gompa. The most practiced religion is Bon Po and Chaiba, you may this day learn more about the religion too.

You will be leaving Dho Tarap today and descending to Tarap Khola. The trail to Tarap Khola passes through juniper bushes, wild roses, narrow gorges, and lush forests. As you descend, the vegetation starts to change from alpine pasture to alpine vegetation. You will camp near the river with a peaceful ambience.

As you trek towards Khanigaon, the landscape begins to transition into more lush and green surroundings. The trail is lined with rhododendron and pine forests, adding vibrant colors to the journey. Overnight camping at Khanigaon.

The trek to Tarakot involves descending further into the Dolpo region’s lush valleys. The trek could be a little challenging as it involves ascending and descending following the river. You need to cross by stepping on the slippery stones, so you need to be careful. Tarakot is a historic village with ancient fort ruins, adding a touch of history to your trek.  Overnight Camping at Tarakot.

Today, you will be rejoining the same route that you did 2 weeks ago. You will be returning to Dunai. The trail is mainly downhill today.  You will follow the Bheri River to reach Dunai. You will be staying at a teahouse today, so enjoy your chance to get the minimum luxury you missed during the trek.

Today marks your final day of trekking. After the fruitful long 22 days of hike, it would mark the last day in the Dolpo Region. You will retrace the known trail and return to Juphal. You will be staying at a teahouse today too. Prepare for your flight to Nepalgunj tomorrow and overnight at Juphal.

You’ll take an early morning flight from Juphal to Nepalgunj and connect to a flight back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel, marking the end of your adventurous journey through Upper Dolpo. Reaching back to Kathmandu, you will have the farewell/congratulatory dinner with our team leader.

Essential Information

Best Season to go for Upper Dolpo Camping Trek

Trekking in Upper Dolpo is a truly off-grid Himalayan Experience in Nepal due to its high elevation, remoteness, and limited infrastructure. Choosing the right time to challenge the Upper Dolpo Circuit Package is critical for both safety and enjoyment. Fortunately, Dolpo lies in the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri and Kanjiroba ranges, making it drier than other parts of Nepal, and allowing a longer trekking window, even when monsoon rains soak other regions. The best time to trek the Upper Dolpo Region is broken down month by month to help you decide the best period based on Upper Dolpo Weather, trail accessibility, and visibility.

Upper Dolpo in Spring Season (March to May):

March:

The weather begins to warm, but the high passes are often still snow-covered and challenging to cross. While lower areas like Dunai and Ringmo are accessible, trekking to Shey Gompa or Saldang may not be possible early in the month. This month is great to trek in the lower areas, but it might not be suitable as the passes could be snow-blocked.

April:

April is a great time to begin trekking. Temperatures are milder, the skies are clear, and wildflowers start to bloom in lower valleys. Most passes begin to open, though snow may linger. April is an ideal month to start the Upper Dolpo Full Circuit Trek.

May:

May is one of the best times to start your ramble to Upper Dolpo. The weather is stable, passes are mostly cleared, providing excellent visibility. This is the peak spring window, making you enjoy long days of sunlight and fewer logistical challenges.

Monsoon (June to August):

June:

The start of monsoon in most parts of Nepal, but Dolpo remains mostly dry thanks to its rain-shadow location. Vegetation turns greener, and the skies can still be quite clear. June is a surprisingly good month in Dolpo with fewer crowds and vibrant landscapes.

July & August:

uring July and August, there is heavy rainfall all across Nepal, but Upper Dolpo remains dry and trek-friendly. The heavy rain can lead to flight cancellations to/from Juphal to Nepalgunj. The trails are still open and scenic but there might be some leeches on the way some forested trails.

Autumn (September to November):

September:

September is another ideal trekking month. The monsoon fades, skies are crisp, and trails are firm and dry.  This is when you get the clearest views of snowcapped peaks, sacred landscapes, and endless open skies. This time is excellent for photography and full circuit treks, and prepare yourself for the cultural events of Dolpo.

October:

The most popular and safest month for Upper Dolpo trekking. The weather is stable, rivers are low, and passes are dry. It’s a perfect time for the full circuit, including remote villages like Saldang, Tinje, and Shey Gompa. The nights are chilly, but the views are clear and the best.

November:

The trek during this time is still worth it during early November, but temperatures start to drop, especially at night. High passes may see early snowfall. Lodges begin to close as locals descend for winter. There is an increasing risk of snowfall by mid-November, so it is better to start from late October to early November for the Upper Dolpo Circuit Trek.

Winter (December to February):

We do not recommend you to visit Upper Dolpo during the winter season. The region becomes harshly cold, high passes are completely snow-blocked, and most locals migrate to lower altitudes, leaving villages empty. Camping becomes extremely difficult, and weather-related risks increase.

Upper Dolpo Trek Permits and Requirements:

You need to have the following permits during the Upper Dolpo Trek:

Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for Upper Dolpo:

Dolpo Region is a restricted area; trekkers entering Upper Dolpo require a permit. The Upper Dolpo Permit Cost USD 500 per person for the first 10 days, and USD 50 for each additional day. This permit is mandatory for this trek and Walk Mountain Pvt. Limited would help you with arranging the permit.

Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for Lower Dolpo:

Since Lower Dolpo is also part of the Dolpo Region and while doing this trek, you will also touch the Lower Dolpo region. So, you will also need to pay for the RAP Lower Dolpo. Unlike the Upper Dolpo permit, the Lower Dolpo Permit costs USD20 per person for one week, USD5 per day for an additional day.

Shey Phoksundo National Park Permit:

Trekkers need to purchase an entry permit for Shey Phoksundo National Park, costing NPR 3,000 for foreigners and NPR 1,500 for SAARC nationals. This permit supports the conservation of the park’s natural and cultural heritage.

Physical Fitness for Upper Dolpo Trek:

The 24-day Upper Dolpo Trekking Itinerary by Walk Mountain requires a high level of physical fitness due to its remote location, challenging terrain, off-the-beaten route, and high altitudes. The preparation must be enough to ensure that they can handle the physical demands that this trek requires. As you will be constantly hiking for 5 to 6 hours on average per day on such a rugged path and at high altitude, cardiovascular exercises are a must as well.

Hiking an average of 5 to 6 hours daily for like 20 days straight will test you physically and mentally. Crossing the high-altitude passes will test your mentality, physical strength, and perseverance. So, physical strength and mental strength both are equally important and must be above average before choosing this trek. You can do the following preparations before going for the Upper Dolpo Trek Route;

  • You can practice actual hiking on a hilly/mountainous trail with a loaded backpack. This would not only help the body to get used to physical exertion but also make them used to the loaded backpack.
  • You can engage yourself in exercises like running, cycling, or swimming for your cardio and engage in exercises more on your lower body muscles, such as squats, lunges, and planks.
  • You should also practice flexibility and mobility exercises, including stretching routines and yoga, to prevent injuries and muscle stiffness.
  • Being mentally fit must be equally prioritized, so engaging in mindfulness practices like meditation can help build mental strength and resilience.

Therefore, with consistent and comprehensive preparation, your trek in Upper Dolpo will be safe and more enjoyable.

Accommodation and Meals During the trek to the Dolpo Region:

The Upper Dolpo trek with Saldang La Pass offers you the accommodation and meals reflecting the remoteness, isolation, and traditional way of living of the region. The infrastructure in Upper Dolpo is not as developed as Annapurna or Everest regions.  The Walk Mountain guided trek to Upper and Lower Dolpo Region will provide you with three times meals during the trek, i.e., Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. While you will be given the meals in an American plan, you will be using camping as a means of accommodation, except for Nepalgunj, Juphal, Dunai, and Ankhe.

Accommodation during the Upper Dolpo Trek:

As you are aware, the Dolpo Region is not well developed. So, there might not be enough teahouses in the region. Hence, this Dolpo trek is mostly a camping trek. In the developed region, like Kathmandu and Nepalgunj, you will be staying at a hotel. In the lower region, like Juphal and Dunai, you will be staying at a teahouse. Whereas, you would be camping on the remaining trek since other areas do not have a teahouse, even if available, it is very limited. Trekkers should carry a sleeping bag, especially in higher altitudes, to prevent getting cold at night in Upper Dolpo altitude where the temperature significantly drops.

You can choose to stay in teahouses at some places during the trek too. The room will have a twin bed with a blanket and pillow. The teahouses are old and rusty, so you can get unique authenticity as well. If you choose to stay in a tented accommodation, we will be providing you with a cook and kitchen staff, support staff, an Upper Dolpo Trekking Guide, and porters, along with camping gear, sleeping mats, and portable toilets.

Meals:

As stated, we will be providing you meals on an American plan basis (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) during the trek. The meals are relatively very limited and simple. The teahouses generally have a similar menu like Nepali Dal Bhat, roti, noodles, pasta, potatoes, etc, and an occasional meat depending on the availability. They will also provide hot beverages like tea, coffee, and hot lemon.

During the camping time, the meals are prepared by the kitchen staff, consisting of calories and nutrients that are required at high altitude. These meals often include soups, stews, fried rice, pasta, and even some desserts like pudding or fruit to keep spirits high. Despite the remote location, our cooking team will make sure that you are well fed and provide a varied menu. Make sure to carry some snacks and extra food like energy bars, Snickers, and dried fruits, as it helps at higher altitudes.

Drinking Water:

In the case of drinking water, the inhabitants of the Dolpo region drink the water from natural sources like streams and lakes directly. So, you will not be able to find bottled water as you ascend to high altitude. We recommend that you carry water purification tablets or a water filter.

Altitude sickness and the requirement of acclimatization during the trek:

Altitude Sickness

The Upper Dolpo Circuit Trek takes you to one of Nepal’s most remote regions. This 24-day Upper Dolpo trek Itinerary by Walkmountain will take you to altitudes over 5000 m like Jeng La Pass (5100 m), Saldang La Pass (5200 m), and the highest Kang La Pass (5360 m). As you ascend to higher altitudes, the level of oxygen decreases in the air, which can bring trouble in breathing, and the body cannot adjust quickly to such an environment, by which the condition of Altitude Sickness/Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) occurring in the person. The following are some of the symptoms of Altitude Sickness/AMS: -

  • Headache
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Loss of appetite

Take the necessary precautions, like acclimatization, to avoid altitude sickness. In severe cases, the altitude sickness can progress into High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) or High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE), both of which are life-threatening and require immediate descent to lower altitudes and medical attention. So, necessary actions must be taken.

Acclimatization

Acclimatization is really necessary for a safe, successful, moreover enjoyable trek. Acclimatization during the trek will help to minimize the risk of altitude sickness. We have customized the above itinerary in such a way; it would contain adequate acclimatization and reduce the chances of AMS. Some of the strategies of acclimatization are mentioned below:

  • Gradual Ascent
  • Staying Hydrated
  • Resting days
  • Eating Well
  • Avoiding alcohol and smoking

Requirement of Travel Insurance for the trek to the Dolpo Region:

Travel Insurance is necessary during this trek to the Dolpo Region. The Nepal Upper Dolpo region lies in a remote area, and the trek is quite challenging due to various factors like the duration, accommodation, high altitude passes, off the beaten path.  The main reason to buy travel insurance is due to the remote location and the lack/ scarce in medical facilities.  In case of any emergency of serious illness or injury, you may need emergency evacuation by helicopter. Emergency Evacuation can cost thousands of dollars. So, to avoid the loss of such a huge amount of money, travel insurance is necessary as it will help you cover all your medical expenses, and evacuations if necessary. Moreover, having travel insurance provides peace of mind, allowing you to focus on the trek without any worry or foreseen events. Hence, we not only highly recommend but mandatorily require any trekkers to the Travel Insurance during this trek.
