There are some currency rules for Indian travelers :

1. Cash Limit without Declaration :

Good news for Indian Travelers! You can now carry up to $5,000 (or the equivalent in any currency) into Nepal without declaring it at customs. This includes both Indian rupees and other foreign currencies, making your trip simpler and more convenient.

2. Indian Currency Denomination Restrictions :

● Only INR ₹100 notes are allowed to be carried, exchanged or used in Nepal.

● INR ₹500 and ₹1000 notes used before November 9,2016,are not allowed to be used in transactions.

● INR ₹200, ₹500 and ₹2000 notes are prohibited from being used in any transactions.

3. Exchange rate and Currency Conversion :

● Approximate Rate : INR ₹100 ≈ NPR 160

● You should always exchange through Authorized agencies like banks or money exchangers to avoid any Counterfeit.

What Should you do if you need to bring an amount larger than $5,000?

If you are planning a luxury trip or staying in Nepal for a long time, you will likely need more than $5,000. So, what should you do in this situation? Here are a few things to keep in mind :

● If you are carrying more than $5,000, just let the Nepal Custom Officers know when you arrive and accurately fill out the Custom Declaration Form with your cash or currency details.

● Make Sure to keep your bank statements, withdrawal receipts, or any legal documents ready, as you may need to show them to prove the source of your funds.

● Nepal Customs will stamp or issue a receipt for the amount you declare, so be sure to keep it with you until you leave, in case you’re asked to show it later.

● Don’t try to hide or underreport cash over the limit - if you do, it could be confiscated, and you might face fines or legal troubles.

● It’s safer to use bank transfers, traveler’s checks, or prepaid travel cards to avoid any issues.
